Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic treatment is a type of massage therapy and has proven beneficial in treating several diseases. Though, the treatment was invented sometime in 1890s, it became very popular in United States of America in the later years. Chiropractic treatment is a recognized health care profession in all the states of U.S. The treatment is aimed at healing the disorders of joints, bones and muscles of the body by using manual touch. A chiropractor uses his hand to treat an ailment related to ligaments, tendons and muscles, and is considered an effective method of treatment. When you visit a chiropractor for the first time, he takes your complete medical history, including current state of health, and medications, if any. This would particularly include any injuries or disorders you have suffered that may have affected your bones, joints, nervous system or muscles. This helps in correct diagnosis of the disorder or disability, and the course of treatment is decided accordingly. He would also ask details of your lifestyle such as eating and sleep habits, mental stress, exercise routine, use of drugs, tobacco or alcohol, and so on. He would also examine your physical movement, particularly the spinal cord, and may recommend diagnostic tests such as x-rays, blood pressure, to be on safer side.
Once the type of treatment is arrived at, he may set up an appointment and begin treatment during your second visit. The treatment is performed on a table specifically designed for chiropractic treatment. The chiropractor may target just the affected area, or the entire body depending on the disorder and extent of the problem. He may also use other types of treatments such as soft-tissue therapies and massage therapy. There are no particular side-effects of chiropractic treatment; however, some patients may feel stiffness, tiredness or minor aches in the body, which go away after a few days.
The duration of the treatment depends on the extent of the disorder, and may last from a few days to a few weeks. The initial session involves correcting the problem through a procedure called spinal manipulation. Later sessions are used to improve the condition, where each session may last for about 10-20 minutes. Further treatment depends on how the person reacts to the treatment; this largely depends on the condition and age of the patient.
There are some ailments where chiropractic treatment must be avoided, these include bone tumors or fractures, joint or bone infections, osteoporosis and acute arthritis. Patients must also inform the chiropractor of any disabilities or symptoms of neurological problems such as weakness, numbness or tingling.
